The world needs to know God. It’s time we show God to the world.
He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.”
— Mark 16:15-18, NIV.
We’ve heard a lot on the news recently; about China cracking down on religion, closing churches, and burning Bibles. But do we know that the CCP is searching for God? Consider communism at its root — Marxism. Sure, Karl Marx said that “religion is opium for the people”. But in the same passage, he also calls religion “one of the forms of spiritual oppression” that “weighs down heavily upon the masses” .
I think, it is important to understand that “religion” here doesn’t refer to the existence of God/gods for the matter. Rather, “religion” here refers to the use of “ritualistic beliefs” to oppress the masses, “offering them a very cheap way of justifying their entire existence as exploiters and selling them at a moderate price ticket to well-being in heaven” .
Likewise, Voronsky argues that religion limits the answers to our questions. People are unable to question their current struggles because the Bourgeoisies uses them as “instrument of enslavement” to “persecute free human thinking”. Though religion “preaches love”, such love “is abstract”. However, Communism offers “unbounded sweep to research” and preaches the “solidarity of people and self-sacrifice” that is “concrete” .
Religion gives absolute, final and indubitable answers. After hearing them there is nothing left to question or investigate. Like any science, communism gives unbounded sweep to research; like any science, it gives no exhaustive and final answers, it gives no absolute truths, but only relative ones. The soul of religion is the miracle. Without miracles there is no religion.
The soul of communism is the appreciation of lawful development and the lawful consistency of phenomenon. As the accumulation of moral precepts, religion, and, Christianity in particular, preaches love for one’s neighbor. But this love is abstract, devoid of flesh and blood. It is love for God, and through God. But it is love which is the same for all. And since it is distributed to all, it is indifferent to concrete people; at the summit it is always cold. Religious love is cold and indifferent to real live people. Therefore it easily finds its place in hearts which are callous to the sufferings of one’s neighbor.
Communism also advocates the solidarity of people and self-sacrifice. But it wraps these feelings in flesh and blood, they are born by the earth, by the essence of life. They are concrete. They embrace both solidarity of the oppressed and hatred for the oppressors. Great love gives birth to great hatred. Whoever loves in a limited manner, being committed to a certain group, layer or class, — will hate others who are his enemies.
If such is the relationship of religion and communism in their most fundamental aspects, then all the more hostile to the new proletarian state is the church, which has ruled until recently. The church has always been and continues to be an instrument of enslavement of the most refined and consistent kind. It has sanctified the darkest epochs of the inquisition with its bonfires; it has organized the persecution of free human thinking; it has inured man to slavish servility, it has been the opium of the people, and it has blessed and justified the foulest wars and the enslavement of man by man.
— A.K. Voronsky 1918 (cited: https://www.marxists.org/archive/voronsky/1918/church-state.htm)
Though communism is outwardly atheist, it is secretly longing for a utopian society whereby falsely created tools of spiritual oppression (in this case, religion) will slowly vanish over time and into “a stage of historical development which makes all existing religions superfluous and supersedes them” . It is like saying, “prove God, and we will categorize Him as real, and we will get everyone to submit to Him”.
In a letter by the League for the Revolutionary Party (LRP), a comrade argues that “God” is out of the picture because there is no way to prove His existence. And in order not to “cause a morass of confusion”, the LRP has chosen an atheistic stand rather than an agnostic stand. The LRP agrees that there is “no way to know” whether or not God exists. Hence, the party would prefer to stick to its “atheistic” stand .
China, too, longed for answers. But the truth remains, neither the Church nor the world is giving her. In fact, it is doing the exact opposite. In a previous post titled, “The Root of Hatred and Persecutions against the Church: The Socialist Story”, I wrote that the Church and Communism are in a bittersweet, love-hate relationship. However, in that post, I merely focused my argument around the indifferences of the church towards the poor and marginalized. Here, I propose that it isn’t just the church’s apathy towards charity that angered the Communist. It is the Church’s inability to bring God to the people that caused the Marxists to fall into a deep struggle spiritually.
“How can you prove something to be real when there is no evidence to back it up?”
Even if the Communist longed for answers, the Communist will have to deny it, for political stability… And the Church can’t give it an answer.
Worse, it doesn’t help when the church is helping the Bourgeoisie (or the western world) oppress the believers of faith through the promotion of “western ideals” (or capitalist-fuelled religion) by sending weapons and gas masks to fuel protests in Hong Kong . What is faith when you’re focused on your own political agenda? What is religion when it is but a tool for political and idealistic oppression? Where is God and His righteousness? Where is God and His miracles? Where is God and His promise of peace?
China has no choice but to cram-down on religion; false-religions.
It’s time for us to repent. It’s time for us to get right with God. It’s time to pray that the Lord will go before us to make straight the crooked places. It’s time for the fire of God to come down. It’s time to work with God. It’s time we testify alongside the Holy Spirit with miracles to a broken world. It’s time for the Church to show the authorities who God is. It’s time for a revival.
