The Evil Within

The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?  – Jeremiah 17:9, ESV.

Was it the serpent’s fault that Eve ate the forbidden fruit?
It looked good for food and it was a desire to the eyes. [1]
Was it the serpent that made them take that fateful bite?
Or was it the desire of their hearts — their desperately sick hearts? [2]

The sin of humanity was written with a pen of iron
With a point of diamond, it was engraved on the tablet of our hearts [3]
Where was the serpent’s hands in all of these?
Didn’t we carve our own iniquities into the fabric history?

From within our hearts, evil came
From within our hearts, we are defiled [4]

No one is righteous. Not even one. [5]
We have deceitful tongues and venomous lips
Our feet stink of the blood we shed
Everywhere we go, ruin and misery follows [6]

Was it the serpent’s fault that Eve took that forbidden fruit?
Was it the serpent’s fault that they made that golden calf? [7]
Was it the serpent’s fault that Sodom, Gomorrah [8], and the Benjamites [9] devote themselves to gay sex?
Was it the serpent’s fault that God gave up on people? [10]

No. It’s all on us.
It’s all on us.
