I was the craftsman at His side. I was filled with delight day after day, rejoicing always in His presence, rejoicing in His whole world and delighting in mankind.
— Proverbs 8:30-31, NIV.
We are too used to the saying that God spoke the world into being that we often forget that He’s got an architect by His side — An engineer who possesses all the knowledge in the conceivable universe. She’s none other than Wisdom, or “Sophia” as some may fondly address her.
I highly doubted that Michael Schur understood the intricate details of Biblical teachings on the topic of creation (both the invisible eternal heaven and the earth) when he wrote the character “Janet” into being in the TV Series, “The Good Place”. In the TV Series, Janet is an anthropomorphized vessel of knowledge who was built to make people’s life (those in the afterlife) better. In “The Good Place”, Janet possess the knowledge of “all the universe”. And like it or not, the character “Janet” is “Wisdom” in the Bible.
You see, Wisdom, or Sophia, is the first of God’s work (Proverbs 8:22), appointed from eternity (Proverbs 8:23), to be there by God’s side (Proverbs 8:27-29) as they joined hands in engineering the universe into being (Proverbs 8:30). By Wisdom, The Lord laid the foundations of the earth. By Understanding, God set the heavens in place. By Knowledge, God divided the depths of oceans and let the clouds drop the dew (Proverbs 3:19-20). And the best of all, Wisdom loves all who loves her, finds those who sought for her, and promises riches and honour for those who love her (Proverbs 8:17-21).
Wisdom is not God. Wisdom is simply with God. She’s a created Being that is unlike any other. She is not an angel. She is not a human being. She is an anthropomorphized Being of knowledge. In her are the secrets of the universe kept from before the beginning of time. She communicates, she has emotions, she has a temper, and she is the gateway to the mystery of the Universe’s existence.
Through her, God laid down moral codes that guide the living and the dead. Through her, God constructed beings, both heavenly and earthly ones. And, in her, we will find the answers to our heart’s deepest questions.
But people rejected her when she called. When Wisdom stretched out her hands to us, no one gave heed. No one cared about her advice and no one accepted her rebuke. In her anger, she will turn and laugh at the disaster we will face; the disaster which she allowed to befall upon us. Since they hated knowledge and did not choose to fear the Lord, people will seek for Wisdom but will not find any answer, people will look for Wisdom but will not find her (Proverbs 1:22-32).
The search for Wisdom begins when we Fear the Lord with the reverence He deserves (Proverbs 1:7). As we approach the Lord with fear and reverence, Wisdom stands by His side waiting to be sought by us. She calls out to us in the noisy streets and in the public squares (Proverbs 1:20-21), whoever listens to her will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm (Proverbs 1:33). She will enter into our hearts and her knowledge (of God and of the universe) will be pleasant to our soul. With the knowledge of Wisdom and with her discretion, she will guide and protect us in all that we do (Proverbs 2:10-11).
