If God knew sin would happen, why did He still create the universe?

Because the Universe is the Lamb’s Book of Life.

A reader came to me with the following question: “If God, being all-knowing, knew sin would happen, then why would He create the universe in the first place?”

Breaking down the Eternal Attribute of God

Well, I think we can approach this question by first understanding God’s eternal nature. God, having created the heaven and earth, must be larger than all of these. No space nor time can contain Him. He is so large that all of heaven is His throne and the earth is His footstool (Isaiah 66:1, Acts 7:49).

This God, whose Being stretches from eternity to eternity, dwells in His eternal goodness with His Son, the Spirit, and the Bride [1]. In this eternal realm, physical laws that we are used to no longer apply. In this realm, time as we know it will break down in ways we can never understand. A day with the Lord is as a thousand years (2 Peter 3:8, Psalms 90:4). Or, in other words, any act that was done in the eternal realm may manifest itself to be of infinite duration.

Now, when we consider that every single act that happens in the eternal realm extends infinitely, and God is a Holy God who cannot allow any evil in His presence, we must conclude that all acts in heaven must be pleasing to the Lord. Now, what other acts is there that is pleasing to God than an eternal fellowship with Him?

“And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. By its light will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it.” — Revelations 21:22-24, NIV.

Judgment as a Worship

You may ask: if everything is eternal, surely Judgment cannot be eternal, right? I think not. You’ve heard of judgment day being a day of universal judgment to separate the sheep and the goats, the wise and the fools, and whatever have you. However, what if I told you that judgment is a form of worship too?

When we break down the physics of the known universe and venture into the realm of the eternal, we will see that anyone in the eternal realm is able to access any possible point in space-time as and when they like. The universe in all of its possible manifestations will break down as a membrane before the King. Creation as we know it will roll up like a scroll [2] and reopened for the pending judgment [3] where all things will be opened for all to see [4].

During then, we will look into the created universe and at our lives as well as others. Through it, we will see the sacrifice of Christ on the cross continually displayed before us. We will be reminded of every wrong that we’ve committed and we will see just how much Blood Christ gave to us to cover our shortfalls. Every person who ever existed will stand around this arena, watching every detail of our lives unfold before our very eyes and every repented sin atoned for.

For it seems to me that God has put us apostles on display at the end of the procession, like those condemned to die in the arena. We have been made a spectacle to the whole universe, to angels as well as to human beings. — 1 Corinthians 4:9, NIV.

Every sin that we seek forgiveness from Christ will be wiped clean; every sin that we committed intentionally will be judged. And those who truly repented will be remembered by God and those who are lukewarm will be separated from those who are clean.

Creation — a Worship of God on a Cosmic Scale

For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd; ‘he will lead them to springs of living water.’ ‘And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes. — Revelations 7:17, NIV

Now, at the center of it all, the Lamb of God seats enthroned. Through the Screen of Creation, the Father, the Spirit, and the Angelic hosts watch each and every one of the Bride’s sins washed away by the Blood of the Lamb. Though they were red as crimson, they’re now white as wool. And in this divine fellowship, the Spirit leads the Bride in her worship of the Groom.

Creation, as we know it, is a worship of God on a Cosmic Scale. It is God’s masterpiece manifested in eternity; a show of love and salvation on display for eternal and created beings alike. It is the Lamb’s book of life.

[1] – Revelations 22:16-17 speaks of the existence of Jesus, the Spirit, and the Bride. Each of the following are independent of each other. Even though the Bride is seen as the New Jerusalem (Revelations 21:9-10), the Bride may also refer to the resurrected Church (Ephesians 5:31-32) whom the apostles betrothed to Christ (2 Corinthians 11:2, ESV).

[2] – Revelations 6:14 “The heavens receded like a scroll being rolled up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place.” There may be two possible explanation for this. In one explanation, there may be a very great natural phenomenon that the skies literally vanished and every mountains moved. In another, space-time may recede into a scroll in its most fundamental form. In this explanation, we may at least still explain the survivors as mentioned in verse 15.

[3] – Revelations 20:12 “And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books.” The common explanation for this is that there is an actual physical scroll that contains information about everything that ever happened on earth. Another explanation is that space-time as we know it will re-open before our eyes as we stand before the Creator in the eternal realm. In that realm, everything that ever took place will flash before us. Every little secret that was hidden in the cover of darkness will be exposed in the Light of God. (1 Corinthians 4:5). During then, nothing will ever be hidden from anyone. The Creation itself will be the witness to how we lead our lives.

[4] – Luke 12:2, 1 Corinthians 4:5 — Everything that was hidden in the cover of darkness will be exposed.
