Enlightenment is the Beginning to True Christianity

I know. Enlightenment and Christianity doesn’t quite sit well together. But, here’s the thing. You can only be a True Disciple of Christ if you are enlightened. So hear me out. The purpose of this post is to point out that enlightenment (yes, the Eastern religious teaching of Unity) is in fact, an integral part of Christianity. And to add, enlightenment sets the stage for a Christian to grow in the Holy Spirit and to be a true New Creation [1].

We often associate enlightenment as a Eastern school of thought. Kinda like a Hindu thing, a Buddhist thing [2], or a Taoist thing [3]. But it isn’t solely that. You see, enlightenment is a sudden realisation of Unity with the Divine (whether we call it God, Tao, Brahman, or Gaia). It is the sudden realisation of transcendence that was derived from awakening [4]. It is the sudden realisation that we are, through Christ, at peace with God [5] and the rest of creation, visible and invisible [6]. It is the returning to being true to ourselves [7] because God delights in Truth in our inward being and teaches us wisdom in the secret heart [8].

Since we were created in God’s image [9], that meant that every inch about us, including our selfish need for attention and our desire for freedom comes from Him. Just as how He does everything He pleases [10] and calls it righteous [11], so do we learn from this pre-conceived (pun-intended) notion and assumes that all that we do is right. This is who God made us to be — the truest versions of ourselves whom He so dearly loved — not some sinless puppet who abstains from every good thing that God created for us to enjoy.

No, that’s not the justification for us to lead sinful lives. Quite on the contrary, we are called to have victory over it, through Christ.

Sin, in its purest form, blocks us from this Truth. It shuts the door to enlightenment like how alcohol snatches away our ability to make sound judgement. You can deny it all you want but you feel its effect. Sin puts the emphasis on the self rather than the whole. It’s saying, “we can be our own god” [12] and forget that we are a part of God [13]. It’s that sweet lie that causes us to forget, for a moment, how valuable the precious treasure of Divine Unity can be. And when we indulges in it, that goodness that resides within us, vanishes for a bit. And, like it or not, for the rest of the day, you’ll not be able to return to the state of enlightenment… Not till you come before the Throne with the intent of repenting.

Say you have repented and have aligned your heart and mind to the pursuit of God. You lock the door, off the lights, play some hymns at the lowest possible volume in the background about God’s goodness and His love for you. You meditate on the goodness of God’s work in your life and about the promises that He’s made to you — about our eternal-being with Him, about moving mountains with faith of a mustard seed, about healing whoever we touch, about raising the dead at the sound of His call, about being with Him till the end of the earth.

Then, only then, you will feel a wash of peace from God, peace that transcends all understanding, guarding your hearts and your minds in our Lord, Jesus Christ.

Are you enlightened?
